A meeting was held between administration officials and drug manufacturers.
White House senior officials met with prominent drug manufacturers this past week, to strategize how to increase the availability of vaccines for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). The generally mild virus can cause serious illness in infants and seniors.
Due to shortages of the vaccine this fall, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued the recommendation that doses be reserved for infants who have the “highest risk for severe RSV disease.” The White House meeting discussed manufacturing, distribution, and accessibility of the immunizations, which have been made available for the first time this year.
Both administration officials and drug manufacturers also agreed that it would be best to begin preparing now for a similar need for RSV vaccines next winter.
